Winter Cycling Safety: Tips to Ride Comfortably and Confidently

Winter doesn’t mean you have to put your bike away. With the proper preparation and mindset, cycling in cold weather can be enjoyable and refreshing. However, winter riding has unique challenges, such as slippery roads, reduced visibility, and freezing temperatures. Here are essential tips to stay safe and comfortable on your bike this winter.

1. Dress for the Weather

Staying warm and dry is critical for winter cycling.

  • Layer Up: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof jacket.
  • Protect Extremities: Wear thermal gloves, warm socks, and waterproof boots. A good pair of bar mitts can also keep your hands warm.
  • Don’t Forget Your Head: Use a thermal helmet liner or a cycling cap, and consider wearing goggles to protect your eyes from wind and snow.
